Italian Team released!
May 3rd, 2009
Fafner has finally released the Italian team add-on! You can now play with the extra axis team. This release means new weapons, new maps, new models and more. During this initial release you won't be able to host your own server yet (which means cannot test it offline either)

Go here to download this team add-on.

Fafner:
"After a long delay, here is the first release of the Italian team:

Credits:
Models: Wolf, Fernan
Skins: Rabid
Maps: Gypsyllama, TanatoVago
Code: Fafner
Misc help: Shiny"

Note: there are only 2 servers hosting this yet, but more will follow!

DDay Linux
March 1st, 2009
DDay 4.1 has native Linux support but I never would've thought it would be this hard to compile DDay on Linux. I'm trying to plow my way through the files that GCC tells me to look at until it works :)

If you have any understanding of how to compile software for Linux, don't hesitate to help us out at the DDC forums.

The sooner we can get the source to compile on Linux, the sooner servers like Coolnet can take advantage of the same progress as the Windows servers.

Did I mention I'm trying to compile this on 64bit Linux? ;)
I'll provide 32bit binaries if things work out as well of course!

edit: Compiled!
Now all I have to fix is that damn Segmentation Fault :(

update:
Dirk has managed to make the code work under linux. The game will now compile for both 32 and 64bit linux!

I was on Coolnet today. There are a lot of newbies in dday. There was a whole team of players who had joined D-Day a couple of weeks ago. They didn't know simple tricks or shortcuts (like the trees in the allied spawn on nav2). And I believe this is a good thing. There are those who downloaded Rabid's version through Rapidshare, and I bet www.ddaynormandy.com has greatly boosted dday's popularity.

Of course, dday has always been small. There are 11 servers listed in Quakeservers D-Day and there are no more than a dozen players playing on them at any given time. As to how many unique active players are there, I honestly don't know. Hundreds. Thousands? In the D-Day Development Central Forums, there are 1165 total members.

It's not a large community. It's not Counter-Strike. Dday doesn't have amazing gfx -- unless you're using EGL with all these paks by Rabid. Yet, there's this charm, an addictive quality in it. I think that the main ingredient of the dday formula is that there's a lot of humor, even subtle. You feel like you're not in a war, but in some kind of a ping-pong game. You die very easily, but before you die, you make sure to throw that extra grenade to take out some of the enemies.

Or bazooka them. I've heard that this weapon wouldn't even work at short ranges, but you can kamikaze yourself once you stumble upon an enemy player. No time for choosing the pistol. It doesn't sound funny, but... it's kinda funny. If you manage to survive, just throw a couple of knives in the enemies' direction and watch their brains fly out of their skulls. Then throw a helmet, punch them to death. Flame them and hear them scream or "sinf it" (I applaud whoever recorded that scream) and "pass it" to others. Knife a bridge. I mean, listen to it. Knife a stone bridge until it explodes. Yeah!

Blah blah blah. Anyway, you all know that. And if you don't, just play the damn thing! JUST DO IT SOLDIER!

Well, it's all kinda off-topic, so yeah there's gonna be D-Day+ with maps and stuff, but I'm not the best guy to tell you about that. Have fun.

Menu Possibilites

An appropriate relevant first post . I screwed around with some new menu items. Took me very little time and the quality may belie that. However it's a hulk-smashing improvement over Dday's original menu.

I also found an extremely cool picture for a console background.

Did you notice the font? Egl comes with new fonts. The font in that screenshot is from Quake 3. There is also this one (which I quite like):

First Post!!
January 29th, 2009

Welcome to the Dday+ Progress blog. The aim in this corner of the internet is to showcase current developments in Dday: Normandy, a Quake 2 mod that can be downloaded as a full standalone game here.

While the games official developers have long since moved on, Dday has a small dedicated community that strives to improve the game. A Quake 2 engine enhancement, EGL (check it out), has recently given us the opportunity to greatly improve Dday's content with 24 + 32 bit graphics as well as the ability to run Quake3A maps and models to name only the best of features available. This blog will highlight the progress made by myself and others and will be updated as often as possible.

Rab'd has a thread on the forums. Check it out to see some of the things that have already been done!

Keep checking for further updates!
